Child Development Specialist

Definition:

Our Innovations 2 Community Resilience Program funded by the Department of Mental Health (DMH), will focus on building resilient families to prevent and address community trauma and provide trauma informed psycho-education and support to community residents, child care providers, early education centers, and elementary and middle schools within 12 identified zip codes.

 

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Mental Health Services and in collaboration with the Community Resilience Partnership, the Child Development Specialist will utilize professional expertise in child development in order to provide guidance and technical assistance to community residents with children 0-5 around activities that encourage caregiver and child nurturing and attachment, developmentally appropriate play and learning activities, advocacy and connection to needed developmental support, and ongoing group and family socialization activities.

 

DUTIES:

  • Partners with community organization leadership, local stakeholders, Early Childhood leadership, local faith-based institutions, medical clinics and WIC centers to identify the needs of caregivers with children 0-5 to develop and integrate relevant programs and services that focus on trauma and resilience.
  • Conducts developmental screenings with caregivers for children 0-5 years of age such as the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ and ASQ-SE) and reviews them with caregivers and creates ongoing strategies for additional support where necessary.
  • Evaluates and monitors children to determine physical and mental development, including social, motor development, cognitive and language skills, and develops activities that encourage continued development of these skills by children.
  • Understands the challenges facing children with developmental disabilities and their families and can make appropriate referrals and provide ongoing support.
  • Develops developmentally-appropriate activities for children who are experiencing trauma.
  • Interacts with parents and families individually or in a group setting.
  • Develops age-appropriate curriculum for children involved in weekly respite care and parent/child led psycho-education and support classes.
  • Develops and facilitates caregiver/child (day, evening, and weekend) classes on specific child development topics i.e. developmental milestones, behavior modification, socialization, etc.
  • Develops parent child attachment and bonding activities.
  • Provides expertise and support in developing high quality childhood educational environments, materials and practices during day and evening respite care.
  • Provide mommy and me, toddler and me, daddy and me groups for parents to learn how to bond with their child and build attachment.
  • Provides parent/child psycho-education and support classes.
  • Coordinates efforts to link staff and families with appropriate community resources to support early childhood development particularly families experiencing high levels of toxic stress as a result of multiple traumas.
  • Provides tools and techniques to staff and to families that focuses on fostering positive parenting skills and appreciation of childhood.
  • Models child play and appropriate caregiver/child interactions to staff and parents.
  • Works collaboratively with Community Resilience partners in problem solving, information exchange, and coordination of efforts.
  • Participates in weekly meetings, case conferences, training and professional consultation as necessary.
  • Designs and delivers training to staff and parents when applicable; topics will include both specialized and trans-disciplinary subject matter and promotes collaboration within the Community Resilience partnership.
  • Regularly reports to supervisor to provide program status updates.
  • Assists in the preparation of monthly reports for the program.
  • Must be able to maintain positive working collaborative relationships with partner agencies and staff.
  • Must be able to work weekends and evenings to accommodate for community resident availability.
  • Must have the ability to nurture respectful relationship with clients and children.
  • Must be sensitive to the socioeconomic cultural needs of the population served.

 

Knowledge/Skills/Experience Required

  • BA degree in Child Development preferred, or related field and at least 24 college credits in Child Development Education.
  • Program development experience in the areas of curriculum, training, compliance, and supervision is preferred.
  • At least a year of teaching or supervising in a child development or social services program.

  8. Possess strong creative and organizational abilities;
  9. Professional appearance and attitude;
  10. Able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing;
  11. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple and diverse priorities;
  12. Must have the ability to consistently show good judgment and decision making skills;
  13. Must have knowledge of principles and techniques of training, supervision, and program operation,
  14. Bilingual (English/Spanish) capabilities desirable.
  15. Must have a reliable automobile for use on the job (mileage to be reimbursed), Valid California Driver License. State required automobile insurance coverage.
