Teacher in Head Start

 

JOB SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Site Supervisor, this person will be responsible for the overall monitoring and supervision of the children in the classroom. Plans, facilitates and implements a responsive approach to curriculum activities designed to promote social, physical and intellectual growth.  Assess and develops individual and group activities to stimulate learning, according to each child’s development and learning approach.  Responsible for the completion of all required educational records. Ensures care and supervision of children by maintaining a safe, clean and healthy learning environment.  Must assure inclusion of children with Individual Educational Plans (IEPs).  Encourage parents in the educational activities of the program by developing/enhancing their role as the main influence to their child’s development.

 

 ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

 

  1. With support/guidance from specialists, ensure consistent implementation of short term exclusion & admittance policy in case of contagious illness of a child poses significant risk to the health and safety of the child and/or anyone in contact with the child.  This includes notifying the parents in writing for specific reasons for the exclusions of their child.
  2. Discuss health topics including nutritious foods as part of the lesson plan.
  3. Must be available for parents before and after class as well as during parent teacher conferences and home visits to discuss observations related to a child’s behavior and discuss strategies.
  4. Works with parents to create IDPs (individual development plan) for each child and develop activities that parents can participate in while at home that continue to support the child’s development.
  5. Responsible for following and implementing all Head Start Performance Standards.
  6. Participating in the planning and implementation of school readiness goals.
  7. Record anecdotal notes and aggregate data using Child Plus data collection system.
  8. Planning, and implementing the program for the class in accordance with the policies and philosophy of the child development center, Head Start and CDE with an emphasis on care and supervision.
  9. Responsible for Head Start CDE monthly report.
  10. Gearing the program to the needs of individual children with concern for their interest, handicaps, special talents and individual style and pace of learning.
  11. Helping children become aware of their roles as integral members of a group. Being responsible for the ordered arrangement, appearance, décor, and learning environment of the classroom.
  12. Conducting parent conferences and home visits on children’s adjustment and behavior.
  13. Ensure the smooth coordination of all classroom activities and staff and student interrelationships.
  14. Document assessments of children in the center. Including nutritional information in newsletter to parents.
  15. Attending all staff meetings and recommended training programs and being responsible for a least three in-service meeting each year.
  16. Mandated reporter of child abuse and neglect.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Must have BA in Early Childhood Education, Child Development or related field, and Child Development Teacher’s Permit or California Child Development Center Permit (or qualified to obtain).
  2. Must be professionally prepared as a teacher of young children, especially in the field of early childhood education.
  3. Must demonstrate competencies in planning and implementing learning experience that:
    1. Advance the intellectual and physical development of children, including improving the readiness of children for school by developing their literacy, phonemic, and print awareness, understanding and use of language and increasingly complex and varied vocabulary, appreciation of books, understanding of early math and science, problem solving skills, and approaches to learning.
    2. Establish and maintain a healthy learning environment.
    3. Support the social and emotional development of children
    4. Encourage family involvement of the children in a Head Start program and support the development of relationships between children and their families.
  4. Able to relate well to both children and adults
  5. Must have the personality and ability to provide leadership and stability for program continuity.

  7. As providers of social services, St. Anne’s employees work with clients dealing with complex emotional and mental health issues, many of whom are facing significant personal crises on a daily basis.  Employees must remain aware of any personal emotions, transference, and/or countertransference that may hinder the ability to remain professional.  As such, employees are expected to maintain composure during all interactions and crisis situations, implement a self-care plan, and utilize crisis communication to deescalate client crisis and prevent any serious bodily injury or harm.
